④ 肥甘：美味。此处指奢华淫逸。
今文解译
甘于粗茶淡饭的，大多具有冰清玉洁的品格；耽于锦衣玉食的，一般都唯唯诺诺，低头哈腰。由此可见，人的志节可以在淡泊中得以彰显，也可以在奢华淫逸中丧失殆尽。
English Translation
Those willing to take plain tea and simple fare are mostly provided with pure and noble sentiment. Those craving for beautiful dresses and nice food mostly tend to resign themselves to humiliation led by subservience. It can be therefore recognized that high aspirations can only be seen in plainness and simplicity while moral fortitude is often spoiled in extravagance and luxury.
一二、田地放宽恩泽流长
12. In dealing with people, better be large-minded and tolerant; and in bestowing favors, better let them spread far and wide.
面前的田地①要放得宽，使人无不平之叹；身后的惠泽②要流得久，使人有不匮③之思。
注释
① 田地：处所，境地。此处喻为人处世。
② 惠泽：恩泽，德泽。
③ 匮：空乏，穷尽。
今文解译
为人处世要得体大方，不要让人因你而哀叹世道不公。
身后的德泽要流传得越久越好，要让人永远感念不尽。
English Translation
In dealing with people, better be as large-minded and tolerant as you can, thus you will not make them sigh with complaint.
In bestowing bounties, better let them spread as far and wide as they may, so that the bestowed will owe an endless debt of gratitude even after your death.
一三、路留一步味减三分
13. Step aside one pace for others when the path is narrow and when you are fine fed, share three-tenths of your food with others.
径路窄处，留一步与人行；滋味浓的，减三分让人尝。此是涉世一极安乐法。
今文解译
道路狭窄的地方，要想着让一步给人行走；遇有好吃的东西，要想着匀三分与人共享。这些都是立身处世最安全、最令人愉快的方法。
English Translation
Step aside one pace for others when you are on a narrow path. Share three-tenths of your food with others when you are fine fed. This is the best way for you to ensure safety and attain happiness in social intercourse.
一四、脱俗成名减欲入圣
14. Get rid of vulgarity, and you will become a man of celebrity; decrease the desires for fame and wealth, and you will enter sainthood.
